OLANDA tells the story of mushroom pickers who, in the summer and autumn months head, to the southern Carpathians of Romania to begin their search. Far from being a leisure activity, for many of the pickers this is a main source of income which they and their families rely on to get by. In makeshift campsites, they spend months between dense coniferous forests and the Transalpina road, where they sell the gathered mushrooms to passing tourists or people on weekend breaks. The majority of their harvest is taken by intermediaries, who sell the mushrooms abroad for many times the price.
The film takes a look at the coexistence of this temporary community over a whole season and sets this microcosm against a macroscopic economic level with whose representatives this community comes into regular contact.
OLANDA thus uses the rhizomatic structure of the fungus itself to describe a socio - political structure in which the smaller and the larger stories, the different motivations and circumstances of the protagonists cross paths and connect again and again.
A cinematic mycelium that becomes a symbol for the interconnectedness of a economic system which, through the focus on the pickers, the smallest member of this economic transaction chain, is critically questioned.

“60 days of waking up at 3am.” Such is the summer for many people in the Carpathian region of Romania. They are gatherers, and when the season comes, they swarm the forests to look for mushrooms and berries. For people who are better off, foraging has become something like a desirable activity – an epitome of slow food. But for the protagonists of Bernd Schoch’s documentary, many of them members of the local Roma minorities, the hunt for first rate boletus is their way to make a living: an ancient way of doing so, according to the woman in voiceover. OLANDA is not just about “commerce”, even if this is certainly a key point of interest. It is also a case study about modernization, albeit more indirectly: we understand that the gatherers follow in the footsteps of their ancestors who used to do exactly the same. But nowadays the trade has become more institutionalized: there are fees and fines, there is even a market as far away as Germany (which sends old sneakers and trucks in return), there is policing and competition from tourists. It’s no coincidence that the last word in Olanda is “nature” – nature gives, yet commerce takes. Olanda is a grand film about civilization as such. (Bert Rebhandl)

Eine faserige Struktur, ein Sternenhimmel, eine Gruppe von Menschen an einem schwach beleuchteten Zeltlager in tiefschwarzer Nacht: Mit Bildern, die schwer fassbar sind, rätselhaft und auf etwas Größeres verweisen, beginnt dieser Film und nimmt uns mit: in die Pilze. Zweieinhalb Stunden begleitet Bernd Schochs "Olanda" Saisonarbeiter – Frauen, Männer, Kinder – in den steilen Hängen der rumänischen Karpaten beim Sammeln von Pilzen und Blaubeeren. Die Arbeit ist hart und der Film zeigt diese Härte. Er zeigt auch Momente von Solidarität, familiärer Gemeinschaft und Selbstbestimmung. Vieles zeigt er auch nicht. Dennoch ist alles da, im Myzel des Films: der ökonomische Kreislauf, die Armut, die Asymmetrie in der Verwertungskette.
So wie Pilz und Baum Allianzen bilden, so sind auch Inhalt und Form von Schochs Film untrennbar miteinander verbunden. "Olanda" macht sich die rhizomatische Struktur des Pilzes zu eigen, spannt unsichtbare Verbindungen zwischen Mikrostruktur und gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhang, verliert Fäden, nimmt andere auf, befreit sich für kurze Zeit sogar mit einem halluzinogenem Bildertrip.
Der dokKa-Preis der Stadt Karlsruhe geht an "Olanda" von Bernd Schoch: Für seinen filmischen Wagemut, seinen Respekt und seine Sensibilität gegenüber den Protagonisten.
